I truly loved this book

I truly loved this book. The Ava Delaney series is wonderful and I have grown very fond of the characters, especially Ava. I was hoping that Ava would finally find love and acceptance in this book and while things didn't go exactly they way that I had hope...there is still hope. I am looking forward to the next book.

I do enjoy Ms. Farrell's writing style. She adds details to her stories that many writers omit. I don't know if this is the last of the Ava Delaney series (I hope not), but if it is.....it was well done!

About the Author
Bruno R. Preiss is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is a member of the Parallel and Distributed Systems Group, the Computer Communications Networks Group, and the VLSI Research Group. After earning a B.A.Sc. degree in Engineering Science, Professor Preiss received an M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada.

Don't believe these other reviews...

Some people are reviewing this book as hard to read, confusing, and complaining that the code doesn't compile. Such is the state of higher education these days...I would actually say that this is a very readable introductory treatment on data structures. Granted, there seems to be the occasional error in implementing classes that strictly conform to given definitions, and some of the implementations seem a bit simplistic, but overall its a fine piece of work. I found the implementations for tree traversals in chapter 9 to be rather clever.
There is something of a reliance upon a hierarchy structure (introduced in ch. 5) which i think might turn some people off in using this book as a text. Chapters seem to build upon previous chapters, requiring you to read most of the book. Professors have a tendency to skip around to fit the curricula into the time of the class term which might make the book seem confusing--i've just been reading it straight through for personal amusement so i'm not as influenced by this. I think this class hierarchy is justified because the book isn't just about data structures, its also about design patterns. If you know something about either data structures or design patterns you can gain insight into both from reading this.
And as for compiling the code...the purpose of books like this shouldn't be to copy and paste code. If you have even a vague understanding of the material "filling in the blanks" and writing your own code should be a simple matter.

Not to bad. The book is a little high in price, but covers a large set of algorithms that could be applied to many Java applications. The book reads like a algebra book, with lots of formulas and theory and with not enough examples. Not for light reading.

I used this book at school

Hi, as an undergrad engineering student, I had this book for the coursebook in my algorithms course. Honestly speaking, it's good , very readable text. I never used any of the code examples fom the book in my assignments, yet they proved rather helpfull in understanding the material. Something, that I think is missing from this book is the answeres to the problems at the end of the chapter that are not programming projects. Ading them to the book could help students a lot ( no need to relay on TA's )

Grade 5-8–The bombing of Pearl Harbor puts an end to 11-year-old Joe Hanada's happy-go-lucky life in the White River Valley near Seattle. Basketball, marbles, and Christmas plans are suddenly overshadowed by fears about the war. When longtime acquaintances begin to suspect Japanese-Americans of being spies, even the loyalty of Joe's Caucasian best friend can't soften the hurt of being called names or of having his father, a leader in the Issei community, taken away by the FBI. Joe finds comfort in his journal, where he records his impressions in both prose and haiku. After he is sent to the Tule Lake Relocation Camp in California with his older brother Mike and their mother and grandmother, Joe finds relief from the tedium of confinement in his writing. When Mike turns 18, he volunteers for the Army, eager to prove his loyalty. Not all of the detainees share his desire to fight for the U.S. Some request repatriation to Japan, while others forbid their children to speak English. The inclusion of many differing viewpoints within the Japanese-American community makes this book unique. Gr. 6-10. In this first-person narrative, readers find out what it was like to be a young Japanese American boy in Seattle after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. First Joe's immigrant dad is arrested and held in secret. Then the rest of the family is removed to internment camps. Joe's older brother can't wait to join the army and prove his loyalty, and he fights the Nazis in Europe, but that doesn't reduce the prejudice and the family's hardship. There have been several books about the Japanese American internment--fiction, nonfiction, and even a few picture books--including Ken Mochizuki's Baseball Saved Us (1993) and Yoshiko Uchida's autobiographical accounts. Like some of those, this one makes history the drama, and Patneaude scrupulously reports the facts and shows the wide range of attitudes among Japanese Americans and whites, citizens and immigrants, even among members of one family. Basing his story on extensive research and interviews, the author does a fine job of bringing the daily experience up close through the story of an American kid torn from home. Hazel Rochman

Intricate and informative, the story portrays the clash of love and prejudice with depth and even humor.

Sweet, slow, sad

Thin Wood Walls follows young Joe Hanada's family experiences during the time of WWII. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Joe's father is taken away by the FBI as a person of suspicion because he is a community leader. The rest of the family, including Joe's feisty grandmother and more feisty big brother Mike, are taken to Tule Lake Relocation Camp and must adjust to a new life while anxiously awaiting the return of the father.

Not much happens in the book, as camp life is boredom, waiting, hoping, but Joe tries to make do and make sense of what is happening while fearing what his big brother intends to do. The story is balanced, showing how not all white Americans were against the Japanese in the U.S. Some Japanese were very angry while many exhibited a sad stoicism. Perhaps what sets this book apart from other internment stories is that it is set in the Tule Lake camp, which was where troublemakers, the "no-no's" and those wanting to return to Japan were sent. This created a turbulent, sometimes dangerous atmosphere that other camps did not experience, at least not on that level. Thin Wood Walls delves into this in a manner suitable for middle-graders.

The book is a bit slow, but sweet, the writing rather plain despite the bits of haiku, but this will appeal to boys as well as girls and provide a thoughtful look at the sad facts of this long-hidden part of U.S. history. Expect a tear at the end, and be sure to read the Author's Notes.

Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese American Internment Camps is also set in Tule Lake, but is a true story. A Young Reader's edition is coming out in Fall 2010.

Good Overview, Simple To Understand

One of the best Cadogan books to be released recently. I've seen a few others that weren't so clear. Contains 70 *complete* games of Master play. None of this "White to move with advantage" nonsense (except when offering possible alternatives to the game at hand). Sokolov advocates for White 4.Qc2 when facing the Nimzo-Indian Defence and explains Black's 3 major alternatives in detail along with 2 minor alternatives that occasionally show up. I played through some of the games and i must say the level of tactical and positional themes are quite dynamic. The book has renewed my interest in playing the Nimzo-Indian for both sides.

I have studied about the importance of midnight prayer and have actually prayed at midnight with absolute results to answered prayers. I did do away with it when I ended up working late. I have struggled in getting back into this routine. It has never left my mind and spirit to pray at midnight. I know greater impacts happen when I pray at midnight. God answers prayers all day long, however, there is something special about praying at midnight. Agbo did not mention this in his book, but praying at midnight is usually quiet. The streets are slow, children sleeping, etc., and I, personally can hear from God and He ministers to me more during the hours of 11:45 to 5a. It is awesome and truly rewarding.

The Power of Midnight Prayer by Pastor Gabriel Agbo has not only provided the purpose of midnight prayer, but has enhanced the reasons and we should pray at midnight. This nation as well as the rest of the world has and is in turmoil today. We are truly in the last days and it time for the Body of Christ to go into battle like never before.

This author has really emphasized this and more in the book. There are many many scriptures about things that has transpired due to midnight prayer. I do not want to give the book completely away. All I can say is WOW, WOW and more WOW! This is TRULY A MUST READ!!!!!!!! Also along with this book read The Complete Armor by McVey. I recommend reading the Armor first and then this book. I read both books back and forth until I got to chapter of the Armor and had to finish it first. Both books are truly worth the money. I plan on getting the hard copy for my library. These books along with the Word of the Living God has changed my life for the better.

I've really enjoyed this book as it lays out biblically the reasons to pray in the midnight hour. Rev Agbo takes the time to outline the relationship of persistent midnight prayer and spiritual warfare very simply and yet powerfully.
