Very detailed, well-illustrated, complete (in all 3 volumes)

I bought this series of 3 books after seeing Deb Bennett on TV, literally while I was sitting in the living room of the dorm at horseshoeing school!

The author is a vertebrate paleontologist and natural-history researcher at the Smithsonian, according to the back cover, and contributes regularly to a variety of equine publications. I know that she initially impressed me as extremely authoritative, and the contents of this series bears that out.

I'm not quite sure why the publisher opted to put this material into a 3-book series, as the total is under 300 pages. I can say that the slim individual volumes are easy to pack and bring along, however.

The contents of the 3 books are:

Volume 1 (major chapter headings)
- What kind of animal is a horse?
- Balance and bascule
- The ring of muscles
- The body mosaic
- How to look at a horse
- In order to form a more perfect union

Volume 2 covers
- How to look at a horse's back
- How to look at a horse's neck
- How to look at a horse's forequarter

Volume 3
- How to look at a horse's hindquarter
- How to look at a horse's head
- Extremeties and the center

These headings barely hint at the rich detail included, however. Every conformation point, sub-point, major anatomical structure, etc. is illustrated with drawings and black-and-white photos. Faults are illustrated as well as good conformation. Multiple examples are shown for most. The combination of basic anatomy, conformation comments and instruction, and horse-to-horse comparisons and analysis yields very thorough instruction. Read through this series and I can assure you that you will have a very solid foundation for your own conformation analyses. You'll never quite look at a horse the same way again!

Principals of Confirmational Analysis

This is a classic book written by a widely recognized horse expert who clearly knows her stuff. It is a recommended read for anyone serious about horses, but it is not an ideal first read. On the plus side, this book explains all of the key elements of confirmation with pictures. It also explains how form and function come together. On the minus side, this information is interspersed with other information that, while interesting, is not exactly on point. There are plenty of pictures, but they are just not clear enough for a beginner to see what the author is pointing out. As a result, it is very difficult to "see" the conformation angles that the author describes on real horses. As a person who is/was fairly clueless about conformation before reading the book, I found it to be too steep a learning curve to start with this book. As a result of reading this book, I am no longer "clueless." However, I do feel that I will need to also read a different book. It is worth noting that the author also gives seminars and clinics related to conformation which seem to be aimed at those who really wish to become experts.

I COULD NOT put this book down! I Loved this book, even better than the first, which I loved!

Warning.... You will be up so late reading this book. I could not put it down. I found myself hiding from the family to leave me alone already, and let me read!! It's even better than the first book, which I really, really liked. Cassie has grown and matured a lot in this one, and Will has much more to say, in fact, he takes over the reins on this one for the majority of the book. Which I LOVE By the way! I just love Will, he is a nice strong, and interesting character. We also get to find out about some more children of the psi. Some that have been around since the beginning of the first book, and a few new few new ones. I love how Will and Cassie seem to strengthen each other's abilities, and that their abilities are growing too.

This book starts right were Dreaming Dangerously: Children of the Psi Book One leaves off, at dream #12 that Cassie has, and the man that is dream stalking her.
I love that Ashley Wilder has a bigger role to play. Will finds out why she wears gloves all the time for instance. She has some secrets of her own.

She was all blonde hair and long legs, wearing some lacy blouse and skirt combo with boots, and he's jeans and an Abercrombie t-shirt. Love these guys; we get some cute funny parts like that from time to time, and some more danger and thrills in this book.

I love how this cover has a transparent photo of I am guessing Will, and the first book a transparent photo of Cassie. At first I did not see that in these covers, but finally noticed it.

So we have:

A tattoo guy mind stalking Cassie and controlling her body remotely.

He wants them to do something for him, which involves a kidnapping, which last time I check is illegal, and Cassie is having vision/dreams that are putting her inside a young girl.

Another mind-stalker which she calls a Dark presence.

Will does not trust this tattoo guy.

Will finds out he has more family that he never knew he had, and wishes they were not his family.

Will does something that will have you freaking out at the end. Big cliffhanger!

I can't wait until the next book is out. I will be getting it right away.

A must read, anyone who likes a little paranormal with sci-fi will love this book.

Summary:

Will Rossi made two promises to his girlfriend, Cassie, to keep her secret and to keep her safe. But after discovering other psychic teens, he is determined to learn their origin, and when a dark presence threatens Cassie, he must decide to give up his quest or risk losing her.

Book 2 It ROCKS!!!!

I just finished the second book in this series. The writer did a fantastic job of adding new characters while still focasing on the core with Cassie and Will. It reminds me some of the tv show "Heroes". Which was one of my favorite all time shows. I am 50 years old yet I still love young adult fiction. Growing up with the likes of "The Hardy Boys" and "The Three Investigators". I recently read the adult version of "The Left Behind Series " as well as the young adult version of that series. I see this series taking off like those did. If you like intrigue, surprising twists, and left wanting more you will love the "Children of the PSI" series. Mrs. Harsch has a great handle on what the young adults (and older adults as well) will enjoy. I look forward to book 3. What is going to happen to Will? Will the new kids be able to help Cassie? How will my favorite character Ashley continue to evolve? Book 3 can't get here soon enough.

About the Authors
Zhi-Pei Liang is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Dr. Liang has contributed to the theory and applications of image reconstruction, constrained imaging, and image analysis. He received the Sylvia Sorkin Greenfield Best Paper Award of the Medical Physics Journal in 1990 and the National Science Foundation Career Award in 1995. Dr. Liang was named a Beckman Fellow of the UIUC Center for Advanced Study in 1997 and a Henry Magnuski Scholar for Outstanding Young Faculty Member in the ECE Department in 1999.
Paul C. Lauterbur is a Center-for-Advanced-Study professor of Medical Information Sciences, Chemistry, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology and professor in the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, the Bioengineering Program, and the Beckman Institute all at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before conceiving of and demonstrating magnetic resonance imaging in 1971 1972, Dr. Lauterbur used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study molecular structures. Among his numerous awards are the 1987 National Medal of Science, 1990 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science, and 1994 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. Dr. Lauterbur is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

A definitive text for the signal processing of MRI

Magnetic resonance has recently recieved many riches in the form of excellent, definitive texts that have bundled together the advances of the last 20 or so years. Drs. Liang and Lauterbur have added to this trove by writing a text that goes beyond the standard descriptions of magnetic resonance image formation and including many advanced techniques available today, some of which they originated. The ideal audience for this text includes scientists, engineers, and physicians actively developing MRI applications from the physics on up. Though containing many recent developments it contains a core of medical imaging information that will not be outdated. The mathematical depth is sufficient to serve as a reference of basic and sophisticated methods but with enough pedagogical information to tutor the interested student. Liang and Lauterbur should be on the shelf of any serious professional or insightful student.

Excellent coverage of MR physics, however complicated maths.

The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, not being an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had some problems with the mathematical background required to understand the formulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improved if a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At this point, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s in physics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understand in detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because of the somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat less destined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signal processing.

Great Detail, But Lacking in Motivation

First let me describe the book as to its production quality. This is one of the typical IEEE productions, namely the paper quality is on par with your local newspaper, the binding cracks upon opening, and they have the annoying "enhancements" of shading examples in gray which often makes them unreadable. I have had this problem with most IEEE books and for the price they charge they should at least provide some quality in production.

Now to the content. The authors provide a comprehensive and detailed analysis of MRI and signal processing.

My concerns relate to the following issues:

1. MRI can be quite difficult. The reader must first understand the physics, then the signaling to effect a response signal, then the modulation of the response so as to select voxels to be detected, and then the Fourier analysis which produces the image. The reader, if approaching this for the first time, even a well educated signal processing engineer, should have a pathway to follow. The authors fail in this element. All the information is there, yet one must construct the framework.

2. Certain equations are critical. Others take one along the path. For example, Eq 3.150 and 3.154 are essential. They are what makes MRI. However the authors just slide from one to the other and then from Eq 4.1-4.5 use these without regard to a reasonable transition. They introduce a function M, and one suspects it may be M(w) or M(z) or M(t). Having taught material like this at MIT and written books on the subject of signal processing, one must be careful to delineate key transitions and important equations.

3. The authors have lots of equations but one gets lost in which ones count and how one should follow the "bread crumbs" to use a metaphor. The classic book by Van Trees on Detection and Estimation was the "gold standard" for taking the reader and/or student along the path and delineating key points and conclusions. In this text the authors just seem to jumble every equation together with equal value.

4. The heart of MRI is the signals used to do phase and frequency transitions across the elements to be processed. The discussion in this book regarding that is, I feel, quite weak. One should be given a good intuitive feeling and then apply the mathematics. As I have often told my students, first explain what is happening and then apply the mathematics to "pretty it up". Here the authors have almost bludgeoned the reader with mathematics.

The book contains great pearls, yet the quality of the printing, not the authors' fault, and the jumbling of every equation possible, leaves the reader wondering. A better press, publisher, and a rewrite with focus and builds of ideas would make this a great and much needed contribution to the field. It is clear that the authors know their material, it just needs fine tuning.

According to Forbes magazine, Johnson is one of the 400 richest Americans. He is CEO of the Johnson Publishing Company, rated among the top 100 African-American-owned businesses. Born into poverty, Johnson was 15 years old when he moved from Arkansas City to Chicago. There he discovered the vast untapped potential of the black consumer marketplace, and in 1942, 24-year-old Johnson created his first magazine, Negro Digest , a phenomenal success soon followed by Ebony and Jet . By expanding into broadcasting, TV production, and cosmetics, Johnson has helped his company maintain a strong balance sheet. He has also held numerous diplomatic posts. Bennett, executive editor of Ebony, helps Johnson present his story within the broader context of post-World War II America. Highly recommended for most libraries. Lessons for everyone - Bryon Allen was right about this one

A book that all should read. Really enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover. Mr. John Johnson accomplished so much during a time when it was impossible for certain demographic of people to make a decent living. Lessons throughout this book. Heard about this book from Byron Allen and he was right about this book.

Excellent Book

I give this book out as gifts to teenagers all the time. I teach Junior Achievement classes in middle and high school. I often give the book out as a gift. Sometimes the student does not read it but someone in their home did. I love to hear their thoughts about this book. It is an amazing story about an amazing man.

In general I really love to read autobiographies and biographies. I learn a lot from taking time to hear about the journey and the process that someone goes through to achieve their success. This book outlines Mr. Johnson's process so well. There is so much that can be learned by reading this book. A magnificent story. I need to read it again.

Insights well worth internalizing

After reading Earl G. Graves's biting autobiography, I fully expected John H. Johnson's manuscript for success to be riddled with distain. I was pleasantly surprised however to find that Johnson; through such works as, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, and How to Win Friends..., by Dale Carnegie, made a fortune turning social negatives into profitable and professional positives. Having met eight U. S. Presidents along the way, Johnson's autobiography is a refreshing treatise on determination. It should be noted that much of Johnson's success came about before integration, when the African American community lived by the, "it takes a village," mentality. The nurturing he was given during the early years provided for a favorable turn of events ultimately guiding him; not without the requisite obstacles, toward a life of success. John H. Johnson's, Succeeding Against the Odds, is a testament to the spoils of desire, determination, delayed gratification and a strong belief in ones self.
