Clear and Succinct Resource for Learning the Fundamentals

Introduction to Probability, Statistics, and Random Processes and the accompanying website elucidate the fundamentals. As an introductory and self-study resource, it succeeds quite well. From the prospective of a current math undergraduate, there is often no problem with locating supplementary information (think Wikipedia, which is actually cited in this book) and difficult problems (e.g., MIT OCW). What is, however, harder for us to find is a source that clearly and succinctly teaches the fundamentals of a discipline. That is where this book and website can be helpful.

The embedded solutions and proofs are an especially handy feature of the website. Setting them up in this manner makes it easier to actively learn the material, i.e., attempt the examples and proofs first rather than gloss over the solutions. The site also includes calculators for relevant computations, a comprehensive appendix on distributions, and a collection of video lectures to accompany the first few chapters. Overall, it is an excellent self-study or supplementary resource to use to first grasp the basics. If you want to then examine novel applications, rigorous theory, or challenging problems/proofs, then there's plenty of other free resources available :)

Ideal for seniors and graduate students

I give this book five stars for its clarity and thoroughness. I must say my first reaction was to be surprised at how much better this book is at explaining probability and statistics. On the whole, the writing of the book is rather light and entertaining. For instance, the discussion over convergence and multiple random variables brings a rather complex notion down to something we can identify. Studying this book is ideal for both seniors and graduate students. This book will give all of the students appreciation of all fields actively related to probability and statistics.

The solved problems are very useful. Each non-trivial step in an equation is explained, but not in a frustrating way. There are some problems at the end of each chapter that require deep thinking. However, I think a few more involved ones would be useful. Also, chapter 12 and 13 on the textbook website are very valuable to me in learning simulation using R and MATLAB. These two languages are widely used in my research.

I very much liked the structure of the book

I very much liked the structure of the book. The text is very easily readable and math expressions are clear and comprehensive. Each section includes many examples with solutions, which makes it easier for students to test themselves. Solutions are complete and easy to follow, and steps are well explained.

The book starts with vary basic concepts of probability theory, and covers some higher level notions on stochastic process, and Markov chain. It also has a section on concentration which is very useful. These together with the book webpage which provides examples both in MATLAB and R, make the book a very good fit for an undergraduate level textbook on probability.

Excellent addition to my high school reading intervention classroom

I am using the strategies this year and having very positive results. I am using Tucker Signing and a good phonics program also and the word wall fits very well with my program. Wonderful addition to my toolbox!

I like this book so much that I bought a second copy so I always have it at my fingertips. My high school students refer to the word wall often. I put up the Nifty Fifty, frequently misspelled and current vocabulary from our short stories. I color code the Nifty fifty per the prefix and suffix list at the beginning of the book. I use the activities that are age appropriate for bell ringers and have also adapted many activities.

I must like it. I already had it and bought it again!

Oops! I accidentally bought this book twice. I already had it! LOL! I'm going to give it to my teaching partner because it has great lessons and ideas in it. Our school is really focusing on phonics next year, so I'm thinking this will help quite a bit. I love 4-Blocks materials, but I have to fight for my right to use them these days.

it gives a good progression of activities through the year

I use this for my middle school special education students who still need some phonics work. Some activities are spot on, others I won't use. Overall, though, it gives a good progression of activities through the year, divided into one set of each kind of lesson per calendar month. I especially like the lessons using familiar food (junk food) to group words with the same endings to help kids read and spell using these patterns.

I had a lot of questions answered in this study of The White Horse. I am reading all of Chuck Missler's books. They are challenging some of my previous beliefs and confirming some. I love his use of scripture, Hebrew & Greek, historical sources & his Bible study techniques so I can search out & understand what Jesus was telling us all those years ago. It draws me closer in my relationship with HIM!

It's a short read but enormously helpful if you are trying to study Revelation. Any help I can get in understanding is always appreciated. Given the translations from the original text and the 26th reading level of the Bible I am thankful for explanations from Bible Scholars like Missler. Highly Recommended.

I have found Chuck Misslers understanding of scripture, history, and science to be very extensive. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the events associated with the end of this era. If you hold the bible in high regard you will not be disappointed.

Harvard biologist Hubbard and freelance writer Wald are leading critics of "the myth of the all-powerful gene." In a hard-hitting critique of genetic determinism and biotechnology, they attack scientists who cite DNA sequences as the presumed basis for a genetic tendency to cancer, high blood pressure, alcoholism and criminal behavior. Such researchers are guilty of leaps of faith and logic, charge the authors. Arguing that genetic screening tests may increase discrimination against people with perceived shortcomings, Hubbard and Wald criticize the Human Genome Project, whose goal is to map the entire sequence of the three billion DNA and RNA subunits that make up our genes. Claims that this project will lead to cures for a wide range of diseases are unfounded, contend the authors. They demonstrate that DNA matching or "fingerprinting," touted by criminal prosecutors as a foolproof forensic tool, is actually fallible. Their expose of the fallacies and pitfalls of genetic testing in schools, the workplace, and by doctors and insurance companies makes this an important handbook.

Harvard biologist and feminist Hubbard and her son (as well as her Nobel laureate husband, George Wald) have long championed the antibiotechnology cause, raising the specter of genetic determinism, eugenics, and social control (read ``fascism'') that they see as imminent in genetics research. Their point of view is that of old-fashioned liberals, winning praise from the Richard Lewontins, Barry Commoners, Ralph Naders, and other defenders of the common man (and woman) and the natural environment against government bureaucrats, scientific reductionists, and others viewed as profiteers or manipulators and exploiters of humankind. In so doing, the authors serve a corrective function, offering the kind of countervailing sensibility that's so important in a democratic society. But, here, they go too far in their zeal, discounting the value of much genetics research and of the human genome project in particular. Certainly, we need safeguards regarding the collection and use of genetic data to prevent discrimination and abuses in education, employment, and insurance, as well as to prevent gene testing for such arbitrary purposes as sex selection and so on. But to deny the importance of genetic research in finding clues to development and aging, plus the causes and cures of disease, is to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Interestingly, in contrast to Andrew Kimbrell in The Human Body Shop (reviewed below), Hubbard and Wald disavow claims that genes have been (or will be) discovered for intelligence, homosexuality, alcoholism, etc.; meanwhile, Kimbrell acts as though such putative genes will determine how we select offspring in the future. Provocative Book

Although I do not agree with all of Ruth Hubbard and Elijah Wald's assertions, I have to admit that they make a good argument. Today, far too many conditions are blamed on genetics alone. In reality, both genes and environment matter. Hubbard and Wald believe that only environmental factors that determine who we are. Again, I believe that both matter. A good book for anyone who wants a challenging look at commonly accepted beliefs on genetics.

About the Author
A.W. Tozer embarked upon a lifelong pursuit of God at the age of 17 after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. He was a self-taught pastor, writer, and editor whose powerful messages continue to grip the hearts and stir the souls of today's believers. He penned more than 45 books, including the classics The Pursuit of God, The Knowledge of the Holy, and The Purpose of Man.

James L. Snyder is the pastor of the Family of God Fellowship in Ocala, Florida. He is recognized as an authority on the life and ministry of A.W. Tozer and has written a number of books and essays in Christian periodicals about Tozer. Snyder has a weekly radio ministry and writes a nationally syndicated newspaper column.

Wonderful

A.W. Tozer's penned words are so powerful the resonate deeply in the heart. It is as if you can hear a calm yet powerfully commanding voice behind a pulpit speaking to the congregation with a fierce and loving determination for the truth to be brought to light. Tozer's love for the lost and dying and his concern for the complacent and comfortable Christian are evident and convicting in every book that has been penned in his hand. His words of wisdom echo through the years and his rock-solid faith in Christ is evident.

This book is so true to our day and time and yet it was written many years before us. It is as if Tozer looked into the future to a generation that would be on the brink of destruction and penned a letter under the hand of God to remind the church of God's WORD, not the words of man or man's tradition but simply the importance of that life-giving faith in Christ.

He opens this book with this bold statement (even bolder consider the time in which he originally penned it):

"The evangelical church in America is facing serious hazards that threaten to bring it to the bring of apostasy. My prayer it is not too late for awakening that will lead to successful reformation." (page 13)

So much of this book is quote worthy that it would be easy to just copy it - but then why would you ever pick up a copy? Absolutely a great read and a challenge issued from a man who walk his faith and has stood against the flow of popular opinion. I encourage you to pick up a copy and be encouraged and challenged in your Christian walk.

Read AND Do

The Word of God challenges us, as Christians to be the "Salt and Light" of the world. For the Christian this is not a mere suggestion from the Word, but rather His command to be His light in a world snarled by an immoral and un-believing culture. But are we being that salt and light?. How have we become so contented with our Christianity while so many are going to hell around us? Why won't we go into "Samaria, Judea, and in the uttermost parts of the earth?" Why are we sleeping Christian? This book is both your challenge-and wake-up call. Put on the "whole armour of God" and go to the battlefield with the Word of HOPE- to give HOPE and offer SALVATION to a dying and miserable world.

Did he write about today's church?

This is one of the best books by Tozer. I was amazed what he observed more than 50 years ago still perfectly applies to churches and Christian lives today! I strongly recommend this to anyone who is interested in hearing the truth as opposed to good-to-hear-motivating prosperity Gospel. This book will make you turn to the source, the Bible. Sola Scriptura !
