Great for students, home study and for chanting services!

I received this book years ago. I wrote my recommendation highly favoring it. I tested it and used it for chanting, it flows very nicely for that purpose. It's in English a first for this sutra. I would recommend that people use it regularly as a part of their practice or to prepare to join a chant session of the Medicine Master Sutra. It's a good positive practice to engage in. This sutra is from the Mahayana tradition and is found in the collections known as the Tripitaka. We have access to a larger Mahayana collection that preserves all Buddhist teachings across all schools. However, we have hardly any of it in English because people do not realize that is available freely and online in Chinese preserved in the collection known as the Mahayana Tripitaka in the Taisho Edition.

not for solo guitar embellishments

I bought this book thinking it was good for cowboy chord embellishments. Rather it is a book on embellishments to be used chords already played in a band. It is 56 pages. If you are a solo player like me, this is no good. If you are in a Band you will find it far more useful. Just my two cents. But its completely useless to me again, because i only play solo as a hobby.

Analytics for beginners

This is the glib, anecdotal book built around a basic, almost stereotypic Harvard Business Review five-level model, this one focusing on various levels of use of analytical methods, systems and processes. At the lowest level, there is almost nothing going on in terms of analytics and, at the highest level, analytics are systematic, widespread and strategic. You can figure the middle three levels. In my experience, there would be some use in providing a zero-level or even negative-level use of analytics, those firms operating in the "data free" zone. They would provide some humor and color, not just useful references.

As to the subtitle, "The new science of winning," to be clear, "competing" and "winning" are not synonymous or even necessarily linked. Competing is not necessarily about winning and winning isn't as important as remaining competitive in the long run. Winning isn't everything and it is not the only thing.

The anecdotes tend towards Harrah's, the Boston Red Sox and several less-than-mainstream firms, along with a few data-crazed firms, e.g., Google. More and more detailed examples of the first-rate use of analytics by top competitors in the corporate world would have been welcome. Personally, Harrah's use of analytics to maximize gambling revenues strikes me as exploiting people's addictions. As to the Red Sox, at least they finally won a Series. As to data, the authors seem to think that 'data' is a singular noun, which leaves me somewhat perplexed as to the analytics applied to editing the text.

The book is shorter than the listed 240 pages. The anecdotes tend to be repetitive, the analytics more descriptive than analytic, and the five-level model gets driven home right away and then driven in repeatedly. We can probably all agree that the information age provides the capacity to mine data, to analyze it thoroughly, to disseminate it approporiately and widely, to use it strategically, and to provide the essential leadership to hire the people, structure the organization, and put the entire system in place in the first place.

"Competing" was not as boring as I expected it to be and not as informative as a I wanted it to be.

Not-so-new consulting speak

In spite of its alluring title, this book is mediocre at best. The authors rehash a bunch of consulting speak that has been around the data warehousing and business intelligence space for a decade or more. After finding Davenport's Thinking for a Living: How to Get Better Performances And Results from Knowledge Workers to be pretty thought provoking, I was disappointed with this work. Unless you are brand new to data warehousing and business intelligence, don't waste your time.

The authors promote analytics as the sound way to make decisions that ultimately make a company more competitive. There is some obvious truth in that concept, I guess. However, they fail to acknowledge that first movers (those companies that usually have competitive advantage) often have to make decisions without the benefit of clean, historical data. In fact, the authors go so far as to say that clean data is a prerequisite to good analysis which is in turn a prerequisite to good decision making which, only then, leads to competitiveness.

As a two-decade veteran of the business intelligence space, I do agree with much of what the authors have suggested. The formula they propose works well for established companies with large, historical data stores to draw upon. The trouble is, they imply that analysis-driven decision making is the secret to competitiveness. Making good decisions, especially when you don't have all (or very much) of the data -- a very typical scenario in first-mover environments -- is the real secret to competitiveness.

"Going by the Gut" may be going by the wayside

This book shows how several companies are effectively "competing on analytics" - defined as having the following four characteristics:

1. Analytics supports a strategic, distinctive capability
2. Approach to and management of analytics is enterprise-wide
3. Senior management is committed to the use of analytics
4. The company makes a significant, strategic bet on Analytics

In my opinion, the fourth item is really redundant, as the investment in obtaining and implementing the first criteria would satisfy the fourth. But the other three are critical. Included in both #2 and #3 is the requirement of an evidence-based decision making criteria. This is what I expect most companies will have an issue with. While the book mentions the difficulty in changing the culture and the potential for a virtual war between the "quants" and the "old guard", there are not really any good suggestions for overcoming it. The one suggestion given, proving it on a smaller scale won't work, because "proof" is not relevant for those who believe the gut is better than evidence.

That said, for those who can appreciate the value of evidence, this book provides much of it. Perhaps the best is the fact how the book describes Capital One carefully targeting sub-prime risks using analytics. Since the book was published, that market in general has collapsed, but Capital one is doing fairly well. The chapters on how to build the technical and people aspects raise good points, but are far from thorough.

In short, this book is a great overview, and provides many good ideas to consider, but it should not be confused as a how-to book.

Higly readable coverage of an area of great current interest

I wouldn't be aware of this book had I not served as a reader on a dissertation in the area of robot ethics. To an non-expert in the immediate field it provides what well-rounded coverage. It is surprisingly easy to read; only a couple of chapters come across as a little dry. As I went through it, I noted Blay Whitby's Chapter 15 as particularly strong; Steve Petersen's Chapter 18 as quite brilliant; Rob Sparrow's Chapter 19 as particularly interesting philosophically; and Anthony Beavers's Chapter 21 as a great discussion of whether it will be sufficient for robots merely to perform as thinking and caring entities while actually being neither in any real sense.

Unnecessarily High Jargon-to-Content Ratio

Although this collection of chapters by disparate authors does give a flavor of the current state of thinking about robot ethics, it requires an unnecessarily intense effort by the reader. You will repeatedly slog through diagrams or technical jargon, only to realized that this was completely unnecessary to make the chapter's simple and usually obvious points. This is not the case for all of the chapters, but it is for enough of them to quickly become annoying. Also, to be frank, Robot Ethics, while still worth buying, contains too many chapters that would be uninteresting to anyone who already takes the Strong AI Hypothesis (that robots can become as intelligent and conscious as humans) for granted.
I believe, however, that this book would excel as a primer for research students who need to acquire a sense of what is and isn't publishable in the embryonic field of robot ethics.

If you're not a student, and you're merely looking for a survey on current thinking on robot morality, you might be better served by starting with Moral Machines: Teaching Robots Right from Wrong by Wallach and Allen (who wrote Chapter 4 of Robot Ethics). They champion a bottom-up (i.e. training) approach to instilling ethics in robots. Or, for a top-down approach, try the considerately succinct Robot Nation: Surviving the Greatest Socio-Economic Upheaval of All Time by Neilson.

Most helpful book I've read as novice in the field

This book actually changed my view of whether or not robots will some day become thinking machines and, more interestingly, regardless whether or not they actually do care about us whether we should treat them with some modicum of respect as if they did. If you want to begin to think seriously about Robot Ethics, this is the perfect place to begin. It would also work well as a text book in an ethics class.

Besides the narrator there are two other main characters, the dark and laconic captain of the base and a woman whose compex relations to both sides of the war brings the narator deeper into the story's web. For many French readers The Opposing Shore (published as Le rivage des Syrtes ), with its theme of transgressions and boundaries, spoke to the issue of defeat and the desire to fail: a paticularly sensitive motif in postwar French literature. But there is nothing about the novel tying it either to France or to the 1950s; in fact, Gracq's novel, with its elaborate, richly detailed prose, will be of greater interest now than at any point in the last twenty years.

The "opposing shore" is uncivilized Farghestan, which faces decadent Orsenna across the desolate and marshy Bay of Syrtes. Gracq's most famous novel, published in France in 1951, posits a somnolent war of three centuries' duration between the two Mediterranean states. At long last a restless Orsennian opens "one of those doors you pass through in dreams" to provoke his hereditary enemies to action. By novel's end the barbarians are at the gate. Gracq's is a 20th-century vision of decay expressed in the lapidary style of an earlier age, a masterpiece of atmosphere and indirection. Highly recommended for collections of modern literature. The Masterpiece

Until I read this book, Buzzati's "Il deserto dei tartari" was my favorite novel, perhaps my only novel, the only one I cared to keep re-reading through life. This is, remarkably a very similar story about the antichamber of anticipation (rather than "the antichamber of hope" as I called Buzzati's book), but written in a much finer language, by a real writer (Buzzati was a journalist, which made his prose more functional) ; the style is lapidary with remarkable precision; it has texture, wealth of details, and creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. Once you enter it, you are stuck there. I kept telling myself while reading it: "this is the book". It suddenly replaced the "deserto".
A few caveats/comments. First, I read it in the original French Le Rivage des Syrtes (French Edition), not in this English translation, but I doubt that the translator can mess up such a fine style and the imagery. Second, the blurb says Gracq received the Goncourt prize for it. Julien Gracq REFUSED the Goncourt, he despised the Parisian literary circles and by 1951 decided to stay in the margin. He stuck to his publisher José Corti rather than switch to the fancy Gallimard after his success (as Proust did) (or other publishing houses for the fakes and the selfpromoters). Third, this book came out a few years after Buzzati's "deserto", but before Buzzati was translated into French. I wonder if Gracq had heard of the "deserto"; the coincidence is too strong to be ignored.

I read the original in French "Le Rivage des Syrtes", poetic, refined, passionate, with chiselled descriptions of landscapes -Gracq is originally a geographer. The whole novel is permeated with an atmosphere of new age poetic doom. It is related to Dino Buzzati's Desert, and was written in approximately the same time (pre war Europe when barbarians were at the gate) but has more depth, more warmth and wealth of details and emotions. Le Rivage des Syrtes is also a jigsaw of geographical and historical references drawn from Persia, Egypt and Venice - reflecting the neverending conflict between civilisation and barbary. But who is who ? This book deserves more international exposure. Read it, it is mesmerizing. The French editor - Jose Corti - sells it with pages which you have to cut open, adding charme to the journey into Gracq's mythic world.

Majestic in scope and form

Even in translation you can feel the lyrical intensity and beauty of this novel which creates an atmosphere of tension which no reader will forget easily: Aldo, a young nobleman, has had enough of the decadence of his native Vezzano, a fictitious republic modeled on Venice. He has himself posted to a navy base which was once built to defend Vezzano against Farghestan. The two powers are still officially at war, but nothing has actually happened for 300 years. Now, however, there is a growing tension, not just inside Aldo, who dreams of the unknown Farghestan. People in Vezzano seem to be tired of its eternal stability, they long for action...
Most of the novel's plot takes place near the old navy base, which is surrounded by a desert landscape which is described with mesmerizing intensity. Little incidents are building up towards an explosion which is only hinted at in the book. People waiting for something to happen in a more and more uncanny slience - that may remind the reader of the fact that the book was written before and during World War II. The decadence longing for action, danger and change, however, seems to me reminiscent of World War I. This is not a book of easy historical analogy. It is a unique work of art which stands completely on its own.

To write such a book as this demands special gifts, and a rare combination of qualifications. E.J. Young possessed these to an unusual degree. He was an outstanding linguist and biblical scholar, and knew the text of the Bible intimately. He understood the doctrinal issues which are at stake. He possessed a lucid mind and pen. He was also willing to rest his own soul on the convictions to which Scripture itself drove him-even when this involved swimming against the tide of the world of scholarship in which he moved with high distinction. His blend of true scholarship with humble commitment to Christ makes this study a reliable introduction to a question which continues to haunt the church at the beginning of the 21st century.

About the Author
Edward Joseph Young (1907-1968) was Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary from 1936 until his death. He also edited the Westminster Theological Journal.

Buy and read this and then get "Thy Word is Still Truth" and read that!! One of the great books that it was sad to see go out of print. Find a copy and buy it now.
