JOHANNES LEDOLTER, PhD, is Professor in both the Department of Management Sciences and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Iowa. Contains discussion and practice and references elsewhere for details

This is meant to be a practical book. The author's "objective is to provide a thorough discussion of the most useful data-mining tools that goes beyond the typical 'black box' description, and to show why these tools work". I think the result of reading and doing the exercises in this book is:

1. I will have acquired some familiarity with regression techniques and a few of the problems they can help with
2. I will have performed the regression techniques in R

Over half the text focuses on various kinds of regression. Then there is a little bit on classification, decision trees, clustering, principal components analysis.

However, I also think:

1. The math is so fast --- mostly one definition after another --- that its inclusion is superfluous. If you know what the equations are, there is no need to see them here. If you don't, this presentation isn't a good way to learn them. These sections often say to check out the author's 2006 text Introduction to Regression Modeling for more details.

2. The mentions of alternate software (Minitab, SAS, SPSS) are useless throwaways and should either be removed or expanded. Who cares if I have two brands of calculators that give me the same answer for 3 + 4? Likewise, there is no need to say that R gives the same answer as Minitab in a single example (pp. 88-92) or that some feature exists in SAS and SPSS (CHAID, p. 186).

3. The exercises are extremely important for practicing.

4. Examples sometimes have long program output. In my experience, it takes some practice to read the program output and understand what each number means, and this discussion is not really done in the text.

From a statistics perspective, I would instead recommend Tibshirani, Hastie, Friedman: The Elements of Statistical Learning. For machine learning techniques, Segaran: Programming Collective Intelligence.

Review for Data Mining and Business Analytics with R

This is an excellent book which is very accessible to readers in several fields. It gives a very good summary of different statistical techniques which are used for data mining. It also gives some good large data sets and show how the tools can be implemented. It begins with a chapter on summarizing the data to have an initial feel about the data. Then it gives discussion on regression (linear, polynomial, nonparametric). Then the book goes into techniques such as LASSO, logistic regression, classification, nearest neighbour analysis, decision trees, clustering, dimension reduction with principle components and partial least squares etc. These are all illustrated by examples with the help of the software R which is freely available on the internet. The book also presents, binary classification and multinomial logistic regression. It has a chapter on text mining as well. The last chapter discusses two examples of network data.
The book is well written with an applied audience in mind and hence details are avoided to focus on the techniques which are explained well. The examples are well chosen and illustrates the techniques very well. The data sets and the R code for all examples are on a webpage accompanying the book. Exercises and several large practice data sets are given at the end of the book. These are good resources for applying the techniques and getting practice.
Overall the book is very good for practitioners in diverse fields such as business, marketing, social sciences, and engineering.
It can also be used as a text in Management programmes, Applied Statistics etc. I recommend it highly.

Learning by example (if you already know basic R)

While this book is expensive, if you know some R already and you are looking for more examples for covering statistical learning/modeling methods, with sample code, this is an excellent buy. If you don't know R you will need to spend a bunch of time getting up to speed before you hit this book.

Even though it is targeted at the business world the examples and code are widely applicable. From the table of contents and index you can get a feel for the topics covered. If you want to see the actual code used check the books website. It is solid and includes the code, the data sets and an errata. If you are curious to know what R libraries are touched, they include: arules, car, class, cluster, elipse, igraph, lars, lattice, leaps, locfit, MASS, mixOmics, mixtools, nutsheell, ROCR, startnet, textir, tree and VGAM.

This is a pretty book with great well annotated graphics to help you learn. The writing is pleasantly clear and direct without being too terse. While the code could be better commented (for the R novices) in general it is good and the text which surrounds the code is very good.

There are formulas here. The math complements the writing rather than being a deep dive.

The references to outside work are on target but the author does not include some obvious choices like An Introduction to Statistical Learning: with Applications in R (Springer Texts in Statistics) for a deeper look at the math or Data Analysis and Graphics Using R: An Example-Based Approach (Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics) for additional examples.

Overall, this is an excellent book for someone who knows basic statistics and the fundamentals of R and who wants to learn modern methods using examples.

Powerful

This is the powerful story of Y'Tin, a 13 year old boy living in the mountain regions of Vietnam and what happens to him following the American withdrawal. The story is told by Y'Tin, and the author has achieved a stunningly authentic voice for him. We see his fear, his courage, and his sometimes childish, sometimes wise thoughts about war, his family, and his beloved elephant. His devotion to his elephant runs throughout the story, and his faith in his future with her despite the horrific things happening around him is beautiful and sad in it's child-like naivete.

This is a sometimes graphic, brutal story that is best suited for middle school and above. The images of a mass grave and ruthless murder as seen through the eyes of a child are vividly portrayed. Y'Tin's struggle with the realization that the American's were not coming back to help his village was hard for me to read. This is a part of the Vietnam story that I had conveniently forgotten about, so I am very glad that the author is helping to keep it alive for the next generation. I hope teachers latch on to this book as I truly think it could be very effective while teaching about the Vietnam war period.

Other reviewers have commented on the child like writing style as being a draw back to the book's appeal to teens. I feel that any teen who picks this up will be drawn in by it. The style of writing is an integral part of Y'Tin's character and helps to serve as a counterpoint to the horrific events of the book. My congratulations to the author for once again producing such an important novel that will have lasting impact. A solid choice for teens age 12 and up, as well as any adult fan of historical fiction. The author's end notes add much to the story and will only serve to open up even more discussion.

Kadohata...vividly brings immediacy to a conflict that too many people have forgotten about or never really knew

For many Americans, no matter their age, the Vietnam War has receded into distant memory or even the realm of myth. Outside of the iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial and dwindling accounts in films and books, this 1960s and '70s-era war has been subsumed by more recent conflicts.

Even for Americans who remember the war, their knowledge of it probably ceases at the point when the U.S. troops withdrew from what seemed an increasingly hopeless and unpopular situation. But what happened to the South Vietnamese people who were left behind when the Americans withdrew to cut their own losses? Cynthia Kadohata explores this devastating question in A MILLION SHADES OF GRAY.

Thirteen-year-old Y'Tin has one passion: elephants. Y'Tin is an expert elephant trainer, the youngest handler in his village. He is not so enthusiastic about school, though --- he would rather spend his energies training his beloved elephant, Lady, with whom he has a close, intuitive relationship, without the violence and mistrust that characterizes some other handlers' treatment of their animals. Y'Tin's goal is to open his own school someday --- an elephant training school, that is, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

But history might have its own plans for Y'Tin. His Dega tribe has long had a relationship with the American troops fighting the North Vietnamese --- many men like Y'Tin's own father have assisted the American Special Forces in exchange for a promise that the Americans will always defend the Dega if the North Vietnamese break their treaty agreement and attack these mountain-dwelling South Vietnamese people.

In the wake of the American withdrawal, however, the U.S. troops seem to have forgotten about their promise to the Dega. And when the North Vietnamese attack Y'Tin's home, nearly half of the villagers are killed, and many others --- including Y'Tin --- are captured, forced to perform manual labor (including digging mass graves) at penalty of death.

In Cynthia Kadohata's well-researched coming-of-age story, Y'Tin matures from an impetuous boy into a less trusting, more cautious, but still goal-oriented young man. At the end of the novel, his future is not quite what he had imagined, but he is still able to find hope despite the horrific things he has seen and done. Kadohata pulls no punches in her depiction of war. In her compassionate portrayal of Y'Tin and his people, she vividly brings immediacy to a conflict that too many people have forgotten about or never really knew.

Not enjoyable, so-so writing, lot of potential but missed the mark

This is the story of a young teenage boy name T'Yin who is the youngest elephant trainer in his village in the Vietnam jungle. American troops have withdrawn from the Vietnam War, and T'Yin's village, from which many of the men helped the American Special Forces, is now vulnerable to attack from the North Vietnamese. T'Yin ends up fleeing into the jungle with his elephant, and has to decide whether to stay and resist or establish a new life elsewhere.

This book had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, I did not find it to be very engaging. I enjoyed the first 30 pages of this book, introducing T'Yin and his elephant, Lady, but it was downhill from there. The elephant became rather peripheral to the storyline, there, but not very important, and I think that would be one of the main appeals for many readers. Lady also didn't really come to life and didn't seem to have much personality to her.

I felt the story, as short as it is, just seemed to drag on, and the writing was so dry and matter-of-fact and held me at a distance. T'Yin was held captive, and running through the jungle, and bickering with older boys, and making major life decisions, and I cared more about getting through the book than about what happened to his character. I also felt the writing was a bit abrupt at times. T'Yin has an exceedingly convenient reunion with his elephant; she appears unexpectedly out of nowhere at a key moment. And, the ending of the story seemed rather abrupt to me. All of a sudden, T'Yin comes to his monumental decision and has his strong feeling of security in what the future holds (for no apparent reason), and the book is over.

Finally, I also didn't like the fact that T'Yin sees the soul of a dead young man twice, and not in a dream sequence or anything like that, but in broad daylight matter-of-factly like it really happened.

I think a book for young people aimed at this time period from the side of the Vietnamese is a wonderful idea, but I do not feel this book lived up to its potential. It's main fault is that it does not do well drawing the reader in and the reader ends up at an emotional remove.

About the Author

Gregory Chaitin is widely known for his work on metamathematics and for his discovery of the celebrated Omega number, which proved the fundamental unknowability of math. He is the author of many books on mathematics, including Meta Math! The Quest for Omega. This is his first book on biology. Chaitin was for many years at the IBM Watson Research Center in New York. The research described in this book was carried out at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where Chaitin is now a professor. An Argentine-American, he is an honorary professor at the University of Buenos Aires and has an honorary doctorate from the National University of Cordoba, the oldest university in Argentina.

Introduction: Overview of Proving Darwin
 
Like many pure mathematicians, I like giving “chalk” talks: improvised talks given on a blackboard or white- board using a minimum of technological assistance. Another strategy is for me to fill the board with what I want to cover just before I start to lecture, while people are still coming in, so that they can take in all the key ideas at a glance. In a large auditorium, however, a projector is necessary, or nobody will see anything.
 
On the facing page you can see me giving an overview of this book in a large auditorium at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The four slides I prepared are on pages 5 and 6. They summarize Chapters 2 to 4, which outline my strategy for making biology mathematical. After you finish reading these chapters, you should review the slides. Then they will make more sense.
 
You’ve heard people refer to DNA as a computer program? Well, that’s the whole idea: to make this metaphor into a mathematical theory of evolution. In fact, it turns out that the mathematical tools for doing this were already available in the 1970s. More precisely, we will treat evolution as a random walk in software space. Random walks are an idea that mathematicians feel comfortable with, although the space we are walking around in at random is bigger than usual.
 
I call this proposed new field “metabiology” because it is a highly simplified version of real biology—otherwise I wouldn’t be able to prove any theorems. These theorems are presented in Chapter 5, which is the climax of the book, and was a talk that I gave at the Santa Fe Institute. Chapters 6 to 8 discuss the broader significance of metabiology, theological, political and epistemological. And then there are two appendices.
 
In the first appendix you can read the crucial section on self-reproducing automata in John von Neumann’s far-seeing “DNA = Software” paper that influenced Sydney Brenner, who in turn influenced Francis Crick—a remarkable fact that I only discovered while working on this book. And the second appendix gives some additional mathematical details that may be of interest to experts.
 
Finally, I give a short list of suggested further reading, some books and a few articles that are important if you want to really understand metabiology. These are the books and articles that helped me the most to come up with a strategy for making biology mathematical, plus a few more related items that I threw in just for the fun of it. Interesting ideas but short on actual content/results

This book promised so much, and yet delivered so little. To be sure, the author has some very interesting ideas that are worth being exposed to but that does not save this book. The first problem is in delivery - almost the entire book seems to be taken verbatim from class lectures. Certain content is duplicated often enough, that the book could have been cut in half with no loss. The second issue lies in the content itself. The author claims to have developed a working toy model of Darwinian evolution. But there's one fundamental problem here - his model relies on algorithmic mutation to introduce diversity, whereas real organisms generally undergo bitwise mutation. Hence, his model allows for a much more sophisticated search of the genotype space than is allowed in nature. In the same vein, by his own admission, the model can not actually be simulated, because it relies on a fitness function that can not be guaranteed to produce a result.

Not as important, but still misleading, is that his result claims to model Darwinian evolution. This is not true, as Darwinism posits that all existing life forms came into being from nothing (or from a primordial soup, if you wish) solely through natural selection acting on genetic crossover & mutation. What his model actually demonstrates (or would, if it could be simulated) is non-Darwinian adaptation & evolution. His evolution is only capable of tiny incremental changes that can not possibly create entirely new structures - they can only rearrange existing structures.

In summary, the fundamental ideas relating biology-mathematics-creativity are very interesting, as is the goal of developing a mathematical model for evolution. However, all this is worth a 30-60 minute lecture; not this book.

Thought-provoking.....

Mathematician Gregory Chaitin attempts to provide a mathematical model of evolution in this short book based on a university course given in the Spring of 2011 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where the author is a professor. It also adapts material given at one of his lectures at the Santa Fe Institute. It is a quick read and an outline at best of his work, but it does give the reader a general idea of the concepts behind what the author calls "metabiology", an attempt to model evolutionary adaptation through computer software rather than natural software, otherwise known as DNA.

The central premise of this book is that by utilizing algorithmic information theory and the flexible and creative nature of postmodern mathematics, one can construct a working mathematical toy model of evolution, creating a piece of randomly mutating software that selects for a fitness trait. The main idea here is that DNA is a naturally occurring piece of software, our internal programming language as it were. This is not an original concept, but it is one that Chaitin expands upon greatly in the text.

I'll admit that it's an absolutely compelling idea. Evolution, after all, is the backbone of modern biology, but its main concepts are often misunderstood or outright rejected by a significant portion of the population. If one can really take a mathematical model and "prove" that the basic mechanisms of evolution (random mutations and natural selection) work as advertised, then it could go a long way towards advancing scientific literacy.

Keep in mind that the author's model is simplistic at best, selecting for only one trait and having none of the environmental pressures that truly drive adaptation. That said, it DOES work, and it provides a foundation for more complex models that will more thoroughly mimic life processes in the future, especially as biotechnology advances into computer science.

There ARE mathematical formulas presented in the text, but they don't overshadow the main ideas. You'll probably understand most of the general ideas if you have a basic proficiency in high school level algebra and/or logic. The appendices go into additional technical detail, but they can be skipped unless you have the educational foundation to fully understand the concepts presented.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the subject matter, though I would like to see an expanded and more accessible revision of this work at some point in the future.

The Motivation to Look Deeper

I feel compelled to weigh in here, if only to help balance the negative reviews. It's true that one who is not familiar with Gregory Chaitin's broader research program will probably not fully comprehend important points of his lecture series on which *Proving Darwin* is based. As one who has listened to Dr. Chaitin hold forth to an enchanted audience for a 20 minute stretch without benefit of notes or visual aids, however, I expect that if you give him a chance to influence your thinking on how life and mathematics intersect and evolve together -- you'll be enchanted, too. More, you might be motivated to look into the rich tapestry of results that Chaitin has woven from his Algorithmic Information Theory and Omega Number.

It's well worth the effort.

Don't waste your time...

This book is a collection of papers with no coherent or systematic approach. The papers/chapters themselves are of poor quality, typical of the publish frenzy state of the money bloated scientific system prevalent today. The chapters are full of raw data and very little mechanical analysis. The price above $20 is absolutely unjust. To be fair most books today are of similar quality, but much cheaper.

Bear Attacks II Review

First of all I want to say you have GOT to get all three of Shelton's books. They compliment each other quite nicely. These books outline in no uncertain terms the risks and myths of bear encounters. If you are going into bear country you NEED to read these books. They are written by a man who has lived and worked with bears and gives lectures to government employees and others who work in bear country. He know what he is talking about. You need some kind of protection, bear spray at the minimum. He tells you how to use it and when. The biggest myth about bears is that black bears are timid! WRONG! READ THE BOOKS!

Bear Encounters: Riveting Realities!

The best writers, it has been suggested, do not "tell" you the Truth, instead they "show" you the truth. The reason is that "demonstrated" Truth is seen more independently and to a greater degree is free from the author's bias or incompetence, and therefore gives you a clearer understanding of things.
So it is in the case of this very fine book on bears, which demonstrates the Truth ever so logically and objectively and also honors bears as the magnificent creatures they are.
While Mr. Shelton may never win any awards for purely literary achievement (at least not by the sanctimonious standards by which such awards are made), he does understand bears. And this book has a ring of truth more clear, more profound and more consistent, than most books I've ever read.
I reviewed one of Mr. Shelton's other books "Bear Attacks: the Deadly Truth" and many things which are true about that book are true about this one. One is that not everybody will appreciate everything Mr. Shelton writes. In particular, people who cannot face the reality that bears are NOT our cute and furry "friends" but can be vicious, cunning and extremely dangerous, may not like reading about it. Another is that this book also clearly demonstrates the tragic consequences of the stupid idea that animals are more important than people, or that they have rights, (which, being incapable of making responsible, moral decisions respecting others' rights, they most certainly do not!) Particularly dangerous is the idea that people should not participate in the ancient and eternal relationship of "prey and predator," which is to say hunting. Hunting is a natural process and always has been. And both you and your children (not to mention livestock and pets) are always safer in bear country where responsible, controlled hunting is permitted.
Written in a style similar to his other books, this book is easy to read, informative and highly entertaining. And it is Truthful! A must read for anyone venturing into bear country or interested in bears.

For THOUSANDS OF YEARS Man has cultured fish. The species of fish raised have varied from climate to climate and geographic area to geographic area, but the final result has been the same in each instance, an endeavor that has brought food and aesthetic pleasure to mankind. The publication of this book brings to mind the responsibilities of various professions for the health of fish associated with such culture.

Contemporary fish culture has reached new heights of productivity. More and more in the modern world, fish are commercially produced for human consumption and placed in aquaria for their aesthetic beauty. In both instances the animals are raised in confined areas with high population densities. Husbandry of this type may lead to severe disease problems and costly epizootics.

Disease has always been a problem, and the literature surrounding the area is plentiful. The foundation of our knowledge concerning these diseases was laid by investigators from many different scientific fields: fishery biology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and idithyology. The foundation is a firm one, and much is owed to the early and contemporary work of these scientists.

One notes, however, a startling absence of medically trained individuals among the ranks of those concerned with fish health. In fact, the contribution from members of the medical field has been minimal. The major responsibility for the health and welfare of all animals, both companion and food producing, should lie with the veterinary profession. There seems to be little question that medically trained individuals could make a major contribution towards the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fish diseases. The veterinarian, with his knowledge of anatomical pathology, clinical pathology, and medical techniques, is in a unique position to assist the culturist. He has been trained to appreciate epizootiological problems and the relationships of large numbers of animals to their environment. The responsibility to make a contribution, however, lies with the veterinary profession. Members of the veterinary profession must recognize this responsibility and join hands with those!
of other professions who have and will continue to address themselves to fish health problems.

A major problem to culturists and other scientists concerned with fish diseases is access to the literature. Much has been written, but it is literally scattered far and wide and is often out of date or inaccessible. In addition, one of the least carefully investigated areas of fish health is therapeutics. Handbook of Drugs and Chemicals Used in the Treatment of Fish Diseases addresses itself to both problems. It brings under one cover much of the knowledge concerning drugs used to treat diseases of fish, and it does so in a logical and easily accessible manner. It is a careful work, encompassing years of painstaking research and attention to detail. Now culturists, hobbyists, and scientists alike can come to one source to gather information on piscine therapeutics. The work will serve as a reference for years to come and is in this respect a contribution of some consequence to the field of fish health.

From the rank amateur hobbyist who comes into the pet store and exclaims, "My fish have all died, how come?," or says, "I think my fish are sick, I need some fish medicine," to the academic expert who is the accepted authority and whose best answer is, "Try it, who knows, it might work," or "Authority No. 256 recommends it in his paper," very few really know how, why, or even if most drugs and medications work on fish. Confusing opinions are rampant. It is into this seething cauldron of confusion that I pour this effort. I know not whether it will fan the flames of controversy or quench the fires of ignorance. But I do know this: I am no authority. I have not written this book because I knew the answers, but because I didn't, and in all too many instances still do not. When I found an answer to my questions or even the remote likelihood of an answer, I wrote it down. Soon, people began coming to me for answers to their fish problems. My "answers" are the product of other authorities' answers with a smattering of my own practical experience of the past twenty-two years of fish keeping thrown in for good measure.

It must be noted that there may be some drugs that the reader feels should have been included. Their absence here does not infer their ineffectiveness, nor does the inclusion of a drug signify its endorsement. Being a compilation of my own and others' research, the reader may find discrepancies with his own evidence. If so, I welcome any comments and criticisms which will enlighten both our boundaries of knowledge.

new horizon in fish diseases

Disease has always been a problem, and the literature surrounding the area is plentiful. The foundation of our knowledge concerning these diseases was laid by investigators from many different scientific fields: fishery biology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and idithyology. The foundation is a firm one, and much is owed to the early and contemporary work of these scientists.A major problem to culturists and other scientists concerned with fish diseases is access to the literature. Much has been written, but it is literally scattered far and wide and is often out of date or inaccessible. In addition, one of the least carefully investigated areas of fish health is therapeutics. Handbook of Drugs and Chemicals Used in the Treatment of Fish Diseases addresses itself to both problems. It brings under one cover much of the knowledge concerning drugs used to treat diseases of fish, and it does so in a logical and easily accessible manner. It is a careful work, encompassing years of painstaking research and attention to detail. Now culturists, hobbyists, and scientists alike can come to one source to gather information on piscine therapeutics. The work will serve as a reference for years to come and is in this respect a contribution of some consequence to the field of fish health.

While this book is essentially a compilation of drugs used to treat fish, it should stand as a challenge to veterinary pharmacologists and all scientists concerned with fish diseases to advance our knowledge in the field and to recognize the contributions that may be made by all, medical and nonmedical scientists alike.

For the library of serious aquarists & aquaculturists

This book belongs in the library of every fish farmer, aquatic veterinarian, tropical fish wholesaler or retailer, and serious aquarium hobbyist. It is not a book about diagnosing fish diseases, nor is it a picture book. Rather, it is a book about the drugs used in the treatment of fish disease. The first 40% of the book describes where drugs come from, how they are classified, how they work, how to calculate their dosage, and how to administer them. The remaining 60% of the book is a detailed alphabetical listing of perahaps hundreds of active ingredients-- including their composition, synonyms, dosages, and uses. You will see that Tetracycline, Terramcyin, and Oxytetracycline are different names for the same active ingredient and see the senselessness of trying to combine them or of replacing a failed treatment by one with a treatment by another. The appendix gives a listing of alternate choices in bactericides, fungicides, protozoacides, anthelminthics, etc., to help you choose an appropriate alternative. If you are in position to medicate fishes on a regular basis, this book will be a smart addition to your library.
